The stables is a design and build project situated in rural Somerset. The brief is to design a new home that embraces a simple low impact way of living for my mum, Sarah, and her partner, Andrew. The project has been guided by an agenda to build locally and sustainably to minimise the building's embodied and operational carbon emissions. The house is built from principally one material; timber. The structure is built from a timber twin-stud frame, structural glue-lam timber and timber roof rafters. The walls and roof are insulated with recycled warm-cell newspaper, and the outside of the house is primarily clad in natural larch timber. Myself and George, a friend and fellow recent Architecture MArch graduate, have managed the construction process, acting as both builders and contractors. Two local builders, Steve and Tim, have worked with us on key moments during the build to provide specialist guidance.
